Votes for Maureen Shea will benefit The City Center Transitional Living

In this salsa-twist on the hit TV show, local “stars” are paired up with the region’s best salsa instructors to dance for charity! They have nine weeks of rehearsals to prepare for the showdown at the Oxnard Salsa Festival on Sunday July 29, at 1:00 p.m.

In addition to competing in front of a panel of judges at the Festival, the stars and their partners are also dancing for local charities. The public can “vote” by making donations in support of their favorite dancers and causes.

Since the contest began, more than $400,000 has been raised for local charities through the dance contest. This year, the Oxnard Salsa Festival hopes to help raise another $50,000 or more for participating charities through Dancing with our Community Stars!

The City Center helps homeless families, often single parent families, with temporary housing, a place to call their own during that time, where they can feel safe, find some needed stability in their life and have a place where they can concentrate on getting their life under control and look to get a job and needed skills to get back on their feet so they can move out into their own living situations.

The City Center is Ventura’s only transitional housing center that does not receive government funding. The City Center truly offers a handup…not just a handout…. through extensive case management as well as mentoring programs provided for its residents.

A two-time world champion boxer, boxing commentator, and TV personality, Maureen Shea is considered “The Real Million Dollar Baby,” having served as Hilary Swank’s primary sparring partner in Swank’s Oscar award-winning role in Million Dollar Baby.

For Maureen, the City Center holds a very special place in her heart.  As a domestic violence survivor, she’s been fortunate enough to share her story of hope and strength with the women at the City Center, who have become like sisters to her. Maureen has also worked with and shared a bit of her boxing and struggles as a youth with kids at The City Center.

“I am so happy to help my extended family by participating in the Salsa Festival!” says Maureen.

This year Maureen will be instructed by: Chuy Rodriguez
